Who Is Śakti?

Śakti (शक्ति) is the Divine Mother.

She is not merely a lesser or secondary aspect of the Divine, nor simply an impersonal “energy.” In the Kaula Śākta understanding, Śakti is the conscious, intelligent, creative, sustaining, transformative, and liberating power of reality itself.

She is the aliveness within all that exists.

To speak of Śakti is therefore not simply to speak about a force operating somewhere outside you. The tradition understands Her as present within consciousness, within the body, within nature, within every movement of life, and within the seeker’s own spiritual journey.

She is not separate from creation.

She is not separate from you.

In this way, Śakti is approached both as the supreme Divine Mother and as the living reality already present within and around us.

The Threefold Power of Śakti

Classical teaching describes Śakti through three fundamental powers:

  • icchā (इच्छा) — will
  • jñāna (ज्ञान) — knowledge
  • kriyā (क्रिया) — action

Every act of manifestation may be understood through this movement: first there is the arising of will or intention, then knowledge or awareness of what is to be expressed, and finally action through which it takes form.

This threefold movement is understood as an expression of Śakti — operating throughout the universe and reflected within each of us.

To recognize Śakti is therefore not merely to believe in the Divine Mother as an idea. It is to begin recognizing Her presence in consciousness, intention, knowledge, action, transformation, and life itself.

Śiva and Śakti

Śiva and Śakti are not two separate beings in the way two people are separate.

They are described as two inseparable dimensions of one undivided reality — consciousness and power, stillness and movement, awareness and its capacity to manifest.

Within Kaula thought, Śiva is associated with akula: pure awareness, still and unbounded.

Śakti is associated with kula: the living power through which reality moves, manifests, creates, sustains, and transforms.

These distinctions help us understand their functions, but the tradition does not ultimately separate them.

Consciousness and its power are inseparable.

Their union is not the joining of two strangers. It is the recognition that they were never apart.

This is one of the central understandings to which Kaula Śākta returns again and again — in teaching, symbol, devotion, and practice:

not two becoming one, but the discovery that what seemed like two was always one.

Understanding Devī

Devī (देवी) means “the Goddess” or “Divine Mother.”

Across Śākta traditions, the Divine Mother is approached through many sacred forms, including Kālī (काली), Tripurasundarī (त्रिपुरसुन्दरी), Kāmākhyā (कामाख्या), and many others.

These forms should not be understood merely as separate or competing goddesses.

Within the Śākta understanding, each can be approached as a complete manifestation of the one Divine Mother.

A seeker devoted to Kālī and a seeker devoted to Tripurasundarī may approach Her through different forms, symbols, teachings, and practices, while both ultimately turn toward Śakti.

Understanding Devī is therefore not only an intellectual exercise.

It is the work of a spiritual lifetime — approached through study, devotion, contemplation, sādhana, appropriate guidance, and an ever-deepening relationship with the Divine Mother.

Kaula Yoga Marg’s Spiritual Orientation

Kaula Yoga Marg’s spiritual home is within the Kālīkula path, and our devotion holds a particular closeness to Kāmākhyā — one of the most ancient and revered seats of the Goddess in the living tradition.
